Madina at work
Lost in her craft
All Smile..All Glasses
Dans le glamour de son thioup
Madina Ndiaye is the first woman to play the kora .
In the Malian society, the kora is an instrument made of 21 strings played typically by men.
Madina always had a love for music but went to school where she was encouraged by her professors to devote herself to her passion. After school she met Toumani Diabate the "Grand-master of the kora" who taught her how to play.
Of course, as you may have guessed it hasn't been easy; she faced jealousy and envy from her male counterparts resulting sometimes in the cutting of the strings of her kora sometimes right before shows.
But that's not the only challenge that Madina faces, she is also blind.
Nevertheless like any strong woman she didn't let that stop her from making her music , delivering empowering messages of peace, citing the courage and determination of women.
