LA BALADE DU SABADOR BY SENEGALESE AUTHOR SOKHNA BENGA!!!

Art Work by Mr Mamadou

One of the most captivating book I've ever read!!!!

I just keep thinking about this book...I bought this 600-something pages novel on saturday started in on sunday and finished it yesterday at work...it's that GREAT!!

Amina you have got to read it, it's amazing....
It centers around 2 lives of 2 Senegalese twins Maye and Ngone of Serere ethnicity...

Both sisters were very different -Maye was a rebellious young woman in a village where men the "Sabadors" controlled every aspect of life...while Ngone tries to suffer in silence, to cover her parents with submissive love but lost herself in the meantime

The author really illustrates how our destinies and fates are already drawned in the canvas of humanity ..how you can run all you want but it shall eat you anyways

I loved this book because I learned a bit more abt some aspect of Senegalese traditonal culture so for some of you who may be curious it's great litterature....

In this book Sokhna goes there with the notion of "djines"-spirits..we all are african so I am sure you know what I am talking about...

Maye and Ngone are both at their terms victims and allies of their connection with these powerful creatures...
Maye was in love with a young and successful sabador but unfortunately due to ironic circumstanves ends up marrying his father...without knowing that he was the father of the love of her life...This poisons her life her soul and as strong as she tries to be and actually is...she has no choice but accept her fate

N'gone at her turn ends up marrying a very selfish man who couldn't return the respect and love that she showers him with...A djinee-spirit who is their protector falls in love with her and protects her from the jealousy of her mother in law....

I don' t wanna give the story away...I'm trying very hard lol

But really Sokhna did a wonderful job here..you can't stop reading you want to know more and more..I'm a little disapointed by the end of the book but I understand where she was going with it

Patiente and acceptance of one's destiny are the big lessons I get from this...It also shows how we as African women can chose to live our lives..both choices are covered with lemon and sugar...
By chosing to be totally independent in the way we deal with our men the expectations of our society or by accepting to sometimes suffer in silence while keeping the dignity of our families intact..

Whatever you chose to do will come with a cost..you just can't escape from the test of life as simple as that.....

Great book cope it !!!!!
