A while back when I did a little piece on Djimon I mentioned that he had a movie set to come out in Dec'...
Well the wait is over, "Blood Diamond " came out last week w/a serious cast of actors such as Leonardo Dicaprio in the role of an ex-mercener from SA, and Djimon cast as Solomon a Mende fisherman. The awesomly talented Jennifer Connely in the role of an American journalist who goes to Sierra Leone to discover the real truth behind the diamond conflicts.
All along the story, we follow the life Solomon and of Archer who are both looking for different reasons for a diamond that Solomon hid while working on the diamond mines.
On a more serious note, this movie raises the issue of diamond conflits.
In fact under the regime of Charles Taylor in Sierra Leone, the illegal trade of diamonds was used for money laundering and to support rebels efforts..But this conflict didn't just exist in Sierra Leone, Angola, Liberia and the Democratic Republic of Congo were also affected by this conflict.
As far as today, the semi -new detrimental political climate in Ivory Coast is also poisoned by the illegal trade of diamons to help the rebels. Liberia is also under a diamon embargo set by the UN.
The Kimberly Process has also been in use to help stop this conflict, its greed and its consequences...
