Sophie in the skin of Sandra L.
Ella Ramangwane in the role of little Sandra
Scene from the movie
Sandra and Sophie embracing
I've been wondering what the beautiful and talented Nigerian-Jewish actress Sophie Okonedo had been up to lately, nicely surprised when I discovered that she played Sandra Laing the South African woman born black to two white parents. During her childhood and part of her youth her parents who were partisans of the Apartheid system fought for her to be considered white but to no avail. She sufferred from racism from kids and adults, got kicked out of school several times . Against her parent's aproval she married a Swazi man and was as you can imagine rejected by her family.
Sandra is one of those people who just had a hard life, her marriage didn't work and when she returned to SA with her children , they were taken from her because during those times a parent belonging to race A could not raise children of race B and vice ve rca, it would take 10 years for her to be reunited with them.
I am looking forward to seeing Sophie in this role, she's also set to play in " Mrs Mandela" set to be released sometimes this year.
