NAMIBIAN KWAITO YOUNG KING, MR GAZZA!

"It's my life , it's my my life" eee, eee, eee ...aight my Namibian people I see how you get down, I've been to SA parties and I see how they get down in kwaito so I can only imagine that my peeps of Namibia do it the same ....anywhoo if I can trust Mr Gazza's musical soup I'm def' coming over for dinner!

Speaking of cutie Gazzie, he has 3 albums under his belt, is def' a fav' of Namibian music lovers, has been named Best Artist of Namibia in 06, among so many other acolades he's received along the way.. He's from a pretty huge family of 8 children and raised by a single mummy, so brotha does understand hard work, patiente, and life challenges. He fell in the music magic soup as a young'un through choir and as they say the rest is historia..

Lazarus, (his first name) knows a thing about giving back , being that Namibia has mad love for the brotha, the governement asked him to become
Goodwill Youth Ambassador of Education thus encouraging Namibian young'uns to attend school and to know education is important and has no price...

Gazza has been visiting numerous schools under this program , showing these young people that it's possible to be sucessful and that we all have to it in our own ways but truthfully a great education is priceless....lovesss it!!!

I know Im supposed to talk abt the music of this brotha but I love the fact that he's so pro-his country he's also working under the TEAM NAMIBIA project that encourages the consumption of Namibian products thus encouraging a more autonomaus economy...vraiment impressed...
go Gazza!!!

ROLAND TCHAKOUNTE SINGS THE BAMILEKE BLUES!!

Feelin it!! really nice to the ears , got me bumpin the heads and snapping my fingers, if you are into really soulful music a la Ali Farka Toure , you will def' like what this brotha from Cameroun has to say.....

He was born and raised in Cameroun where he caught the "music bug"he remenbers jamming after school with his friends in his former neigherbood. His love affair with blues kinda sorta happened, he was introduced to it while he listened to John Lee Hooker..that was it he was in love.

He started by playing as a bassist in local bands ect, today his career has him living btw Europe , Afirika and Asia. He's a favorite among jazz festival fans, he's been invited to the creme of the crop of all jazz festivals; the Montreal Jazz festival, the Chicago Jazz Festival.....

People are always surprised at how he manages to mix african rythm and lyrics to tradional blues....It's also important to talk abt the 2 fabulous musicians that are part of the Roland Tchakounte experience; Mick Ravassat at the guitar and Mathias Bernheim at the percussions..as Roland said they are two essential factors in the beautiful music he plays.

Roland's latest album is called Waka and he calls it the "most finished albun" he's made as of today....anywhoo I really like his music hope you get to appreciate it too....

MICROCREDIT AFRICA WORKS, BEAUTIFUL PROJECT BY YOUSSOU NDOUR & THE BIRIMA ORGANIZATION & BENETTON!

Abdou Diouf , poissonier
Ally Mane (Miller)& Kante (Welder)
Fatou Diatta, Subsistence Farmer
Tousso Sow , Livestock MerchantYoussou and the artists supporting the "AFRICA WORKS"CAMPAIGN!!
(check the song at the bottom of the post , quite uplifting)

If you've never heard of Youssou N'dour one of the most beautiful voices out of Africa , you may have heard about the clothing line Benetton . Well these two separate entities put their strenght together in order to better the future of people in Senegal, people who may have projects, desires to help their families out , they may not have the financial means or the education but they have brilliant ideas and the will to get there...

That's where Birima comes in, Youssou Ndour a proud Senegalese singer who's been on the largest and most exciting music scenes believes in the future of his country and is known to be both a savy businessman and a philantrophist. Under this microcredit project all are welcome, struggling artists, businessmen, entrepreneurs,ect... and the big deal with AFRICA WORKS is that it grants loans for a higher amount of time for instance I read in Birima.org that one of their goals is to grant
500 loans for 25/50 Millions CFA over a period of 5 years...
Some of the artists who join force with You and Benetton are Patti Smith, Francesco Renga,Simphiwe Dana (one of my fav artists) ectt.....

ERITREAN PAINTER AND ACTIVIST THROUGH HIS BRUSHES, MICHAEL YEGIZAW!

I love his mosaic work!
Women's Day!
A closer view of the piece noted above!

Nice!

As I always say, there are so many "great "African people out there who are doing their thang that we need to honor, among them meet Michael or Yeggy as he's fondly called.
Yeggy was born in Adis Abeba Ethiopia where he attended the Adis Abeba Art school before moving to Kenya when the war started. He's known for being a cultural ambassador of East African Art but also for being a leader in the community with his campaign against AIDS.

In fact, he gave back to his country by organizing in Eritrea the very first
"Artists Against Aids" campaign in Eretria. I think sometimes we don't give enough credit to artists, we don't give enough credit to these people who use their imagination to express our pain, happiness, our cries for help ect....
Yeggy seems so laid back and humble despite the fact that his art work is part of every day life in Seattle , if u live or ever visit stop by the Children's Museum you are sure to see some of his mosaic work.

He also had the great honor of having his work exhibited at the UN, he designed billboard ads for the San Diego zoo,ect...

I notice that he's really big on linking the arts and children , and he's absolutely right education starts at a young age. Yeggy does painting , ceramic, mosaic, book illustrations commission work.On top of that he also teaches middle and high school students through the Arts Corp program.

As you can imagine throughout his career he's received well deserving acolades, and is defenelty represing Eritrea in a positive light.
